The beauty samples are piling up
Have you pared back on my skin and makeup in recent years but still have a bathroom cabinet full of beauty samples? Those cute little tubes of moisturizer are there. The miniature lipsticks from a gift-with-purchase are there too. Even the travel-sized serum is probably at the back of the bathroom cabinet, long forgotten.
Before you buy yet another full-sized product why not challenge yourself to use up what you already have? It’s a fun way to declutter, save some cash, and maybe even rediscover a new favourite.
Here’s a guide to conquering your sample mountain and turning that clutter into a win-win situation:
1. The “Treat Yo’self” challenge
This is the most fun and straightforward approach. Dedicate a week (or even a month) to using only your beauty samples. Think of it as a beauty-themed “pantry challenge.” Use up those tiny face masks, try the different cleansers, and see which ones you actually like. You might be surprised to find a hidden gem you forgot you had.
2. The “Glamour on the go” stash
Store a few in your car. I have a sample face mist in my glove box which is perfect for hot and sticky days. And once it’s finished I’ll top it up with some rosewater from the local Indian supermarket.
- What to include:
- A mini hand lotion.
- Perfume samples (kids muddy football boots smell delightful don’t they?)
- Lip gloss
- Sunscreen samples
- Sample bronzer (for cheeks and eyes)
- Hand sanitiser

3. Be the Beauty Fairy
Do you have friends, sisters, or neighbours who could do with some kindness right now? Bag up a few mini products, add some flowers and a note that says, “Just because”. It’s a thoughtful way to connect with the women in your life and makes them feel seen.
Host a ‘beauty sample swap’ afternoon
Create your own Mecca or Sephora at home. Have everyone bring their unwanted beauty samples and trade them with each other. It’s a great excuse to get together, catch up, and try new products for free.
4. Beauty samples worth selling

If you have a lot of new, unused beauty samples from high-end brands, you can actually sell them online. Local Facebook groups, Marketplace, eBay, Trademe are great for this. You won’t make a fortune, but you can make a few dollars to help pay for something you really want.
5. Donate
And let’s not forget about the shampoos, conditioners, and soaps from your last holiday. Organisations like The Aunties (helping women escape family violence) are always in need of toiletries. Or email Dress for Success or Hospice NZ and see where best to direct your donations.
So, before you hit “add to cart” on a new beauty product, take a look at what you already have. Your wallet (and your bathroom cabinet) will thank you – one tube at a time.
